The Energy Transition Ain't Happening: Hydrogen In Australia

  July 20, 2024   Francis Menton   These days, there is lots and lots of news about how the supposed “energy transition” is not happening. There’s so much news on this subject that I could devote this entire blog to that subject alone and have plenty to occupy my time. Expect multiple posts about this topic over the next several weeks. To whet your appetite, I will take you today to Australia, where we find the latest news on the inevitable collapse of impossible dream of “green” hydrogen as the means to make electricity from wind and sun work. But before getting to the latest news, kindly let me remind you of my post of February 14, 2024 titled  “When You Crunch The Numbers, Green Hydrogen Is A Non-Starter.”  “Green” hydrogen is the type of hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water using electricity generated only by wind and sun. The idea is that you run your electrolyzer to make the “green” hydrogen on sunny and windy days when the wind turbines and solar panels produce a surplus;

A Bet Against the “Energy Transition”

  Modern civilization depends on abundant, affordable, and reliable energy. Policies that ignore this won’t turn out well   / Eye on the News  /  Infrastructure and energy ,  Economy, finance, and budgets   Jul 16 2024    Starting this month, everyday citizens, not just hedge fund managers and traders, will be able to make direct bets on “big” issues ranging from basic economic indicators to the weather. Based in Greenwich, Connecticut, the global trading firm  Interactive Brokers  has won U.S. federal approval to run a “prediction market” platform allowing users to make bets on everything from consumer sentiment to the national debt to “atmospheric carbon dioxide.” As the  Wall Street Journal   reported , “Interactive Brokers said it believes that it ‘can help establish a collective view’ on ‘controversial issues.’” Let’s hope for an opportunity to bet on whether the  energy transition , the linchpin of the ruling energy orthodoxy, will in fact happen. The orthodox view, of course, is

The Offshore Wind Energy Scandal Is Even Worse Than You Think

Image
  These 11 charts show how America’s biggest NGOs are colluding with foreign corporations that want to industrialize our oceans with thousands of turbines that will hurt whales and ratepayers   JUL 15, 2024   This humpback whale washed ashore on Martha’s Vineyard in June 2023 . Two of Europe’s biggest energy companies are abandoning the SS Offshore Wind. In May, Shell, the UK-based oil and gas giant ( 2023 revenue: $317 billion ), announced that it was cutting staff from its offshore wind business because,  according to Bloomberg , the company has decided to focus on markets that “deliver the most value for our investors and customers.” Bloomberg also reported that the staff cuts were made after the departures of top executives in the company’s offshore wind and renewable power businesses. Last month, Murray Auchincloss, the CEO of oil and gas giant BP, imposed a “hiring freeze and paused new offshore wind projects.”  According to Reuters , the new CEO is putting more “emphasis on oil

Borrello Calls Dismantling Of Towers A ‘Waste’

  New York state Sen. George Borrello called the dismantling of the turbine at Exit 59 of the Thruway “a symbol of the ridiculous boondoggle and taxpayer-funded investment scam that industrial wind and solar have become in our state.”   Borrello was contacted Wednesday after crews took down the tower that has not been operating for at least six years. “I guess the Thruway Authority is finally sick of the embarrassment caused by these albatross wind turbines that are a monument of how they were scammed by a fly-by-night ‘green’ energy company,” he said. “So now they are wasting even more toll-payer money to take them down. His frustrations mounted when he questioned increases that were passed on to motorists in the past year. “The Thruway Authority raised tolls because they claimed they are facing a multi-year, multimillion dollar deficit starting this year,” he said. “Yet, when I asked the acting Executive Director, in the budget hearings, how much money was wasted on those nonworking

Supreme Court overturns FERC solar approval after Chevron’s demise

  A Montana solar project may be one of the first casualties of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the  Chevron  doctrine. In a short order Tuesday,  the justices granted a request to reverse a lower court ruling affirming the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s approval of the Broadview solar array and battery storage facility in Billings, Montana.   The order was one of nine directing federal courts to reconsider decisions on everything from Internal Revenue Service audits to the removal of officials from federal offices, based on Friday’s  Chevron  ruling. “This is the perfect trial case to examine the reach” of Chevron’s end, said Joel Eisen, a law professor at the University of Richmond, about the solar case. The court’s order is a win for the Edison Electric Institute and utility NorthWestern Energy, which claimed the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit got it wrong when it deferred to FERC’s interpretation of what counted as a “qualifying facility

Defiling Maine: 656' tall wind turbines heading to Harrrington, ME

  The turbine sections are headed toward the Downeast Wind project site north of Harrington. The wind power developer, Virginia-based Apex Clean Energy, plans to erect   30 turbines   spread out among various locations in the town of Columbia and in townships 18 and 24 in the state’s Unorganized Territory. When assembled, each of the turbines will have a maximum height of 656 feet, more than double the height of the Statue of Liberty and almost 200 feet taller   than many wind turbines in the U.S.  The entire project is expected to have a production capacity of 126 megawatts.
