A “wind drought” in Europe forced Germany to burn more coal – no choice given their rejection of nuclear power.

 

And a protracted wind drought can happen anywhere – and does.

German utility execs who champion the Energiewende are starting to panic after this month's shocking 12-day wind drought. RWE CEO Markus Krebber posted a desperate plea for more "secure" power supplies this morning on LinkedIn. The situation is coming to a breaking point.

Looking at German electricity this week you could be forgiven for forgetting they've spent FIVE HUNDRED BILLION € on a renewable energy "transition" They're just straight up fossil powered! With high costs, high carbon, and a shrinking economy.

Trump’s Executive Order Throws Caution to the Wind (and Solar)

  Enacted in August 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act (the “IRA”) expanded energy tax credits by increasing credit amounts, broadening eligibility beyond wind and solar, and allowing credits to be developed and sold, as outlined  here . The winds have now shifted . Two years later, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (the “OBBBA”) slows that momentum by  delivering a final blow to wind and solar , terminating the tech-neutral investment tax credit (“ITC”) and production tax credit (“PTC”) for projects that are not placed in service before 2028, with a safe harbor for projects that begin construction within 12 months of enactment. The OBBBA also  introduces sweeping “foreign entity of concern” limitations that could disqualify many projects from the credits entirely. The wind-down  doesn’t stop there . Why Spain’s Rooftop Solar Owners Weren’t Spared From the Blackout

  When the electricity  suddenly went out in Spain  on Monday, Irene Casas and her husband Luis Morate, who live in an apartment building in a Madrid suburb, lost power along with everyone else. That’s despite the fact that they, along with their neighbors,  own a source of electricity : 200 rooftop solar panels installed at the end of 2023. The panels didn’t help them ride out the blackout because they are connected directly to the grid. Each co-owner, including Casas and Morate and their neighbors, gets a discount on their utility bill in exchange for the power they put into the electricity network, but the panels themselves don’t directly supply their apartments with energy. Casas and Morate’s experience goes against what many people would consider conventional wisdom: Solar on your roof provides energy independence.
