JCC hosts nuclear energy info session

WATERTOWN — Assemblyman Scott A. Gray hosted a public forum Wednesday to share information on the benefits of nuclear energy.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed the New York Power Authority to explore advanced nuclear energy.

During the forum at Jefferson Community College’s Sturtz Theater, Keith Schue from Nuclear NY, Youssef Ballout from Kadmos Energy, Carl Perez of Exodys Energy and Greg Lancette of UA 81 spoke and took questions from the public.

“We all want the same thing,” Schue said. “We all want clean air. We want clean water. We want to protect the environment. … We want reliable energy. We want a vibrant economy, good jobs made here with products you can make here in America.”

Schue said nuclear has the smallest physical footprint of any human energy source.

“That means you're conserving land,” he said while adding that nuclear requires the least amount of material of any energy source.

During a question and answer portion of the forum, the nuclear experts were asked about jobs and how many could be created. They responded that over thousands of jobs have been created by upstate nuclear facilities.

Gray said after the forum that if there is more education needs to be done, “We will continue to do that.”

Gray said officials will be looking at potential sites “in short order.”

“There’s a whole process to this,” he said.

The workforce development could take some time, Gray said, and construction of a potential facility would also take some time.

The assemblyman said officials are identifying locations and requests for information will be going out to IDAs in interested counties.

“The more we tell the story, the more support we build,” Gray said. “This is data driven and people said they needed more education. We’re providing that education, and we will continue to do that until people are comfortable with the path that we’re taking.”

Gray will host another event in Potsdam at Clarkson University’s Student Center Forum from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
